My name is Paul Harper. Along with my wife Brenda, we purchased the farm in 1994. At that time it had not been maintained for over 20 years so was mostly a briar patch. With many, many long hours of work with a chain saw, post driver, and a goat herd, Brenda and I finally started to make a difference in the way the farm looked over the span of 5 years. It is a continual effort to maintain what we have cleared into pasture as well as develop “rough land” back into the pasture it was years ago.
We started raising cattle in 1995 just because we had this farm and having cows is what you should do. In 2000, we decided to use better bulls for better calves. In 2004, we began marketing all natural beef and our herd expanded to about 40 head located on two farm locations. Then, we had the drought in 2007. Unable to find hay at any price and with other costs going up 2 to 4 fold, we reduced the herd and brought all remaining animals back to our home farm. Now, we successfully run approximately 15 head at any one time, including animals ready for or being prepared for slaughter.
