What is all natural beef- we don’t claim to be organic, which is a buzz word that many people fail to fully understand-sometimes what you think is not what you get. Here is what OUR natural beef is-
- We feed our cows natural grass in the summer and supplement their diet with grass hay in the winter. We use a small amount of antibody/hormone FREE feed in the winter for additional protein and to make the cows “come when you call them”.
- We do use fertilizer on our pasture ground
- We do use weed killer on our weeds, we do not spray the entire field, just the weeds.
- We do give our calves a Black Leg injection which I try to describe as giving your child a polio shot. It is a one time injection given between 3 and 4 months of age. Black leg is a killing disease that affects calves generally under one year old.
- We do provide worming control to cattle under 2 years old. Sometimes that is an injection and sometimes a pour on drench.
Since 1994 we have had essentially no illness or disease on the farm. With our simple health program we are satisfied with our cattle’s good health.
- We DO NOT use antibodies to promote growth.
- We DO NOT use hormones to promote growth.
OUR MEAT:
We use a USDA inspected meat packing facility in Russell County, VA. After slaughter our beef is dry aged for 21 days before being processed into individually wrapped packages, generally about 1 pound in weight except with roasts or brisket.
Our customers are offered the choice of buying beef in bulk, by the side or whole beef. Our cattle have usually dressed out between 450# to 500# so a side of beef would be under 250# which FILLS up two refrigerator freezers.
We also sell packaged cuts, here at the farm, just like you would be getting at the store except ours is frozen and cryovaced.
